NYFW Beauty Fall 2015: The 20s Are Back

While pretty and neutral are always nice and currently on trend, there’s something, well, glamorous about a bright lip and bold lashes. These modern takes on ’20s style are sure to inspire a vampy new look for fall; Fashion Reverie guarantees it.

For Marchesa’s fall 2015 show, makeup artist Gucci Westman took inspiration from the Great Gatsby era. “I wanted to create a more youthful interpretation appearing as though she had been dancing all night,” Westman explains. “Sort of a tousled Great Gatsby sexy girl who’s having fun.”

Using Revlon products, Westman created super luminous skin with Revlon’s PhotoReady Skinlights Face Illuminator in “Bare Lights” on the bridge of the nose and cheeks, as well as the tear ducts. On the eyelids she used Revlon’s Illuminance Crème Shadows in “Not Just Nudes” on the top and bottom, layering it with Revlon’s PhotoReady Eye Art in “Burnished Bling,” a chocolate shadow. The eyes are finished with a gloss for a 1930’s greasy look just before the models hit the runway. For a sultry pout, Westman lines the lips with Revlon Lip Liner in “Raisin” and then Revlon’s Super Lustrous lipstick in “Black Cherry” for an almost “rusty lip” that’s still pretty and soft around the edges.

To enhance the makeup and a 1920’s flapper aesthetic, Antonio Corral Calero for Moroccanoil created fantastic faux bobs. To get the look, Calero starts with damp hair to which he applies a cocktail of Moroccanoil Treatment and Volumizing Mousse from root-to-tip. He also adds a little Moroccanoil Root Boost to ensure a little lift. Next, he creates a deep left side part that starts directly above the arch of the brow and continues to the crown of the head on a slightly rounded angle.  Calero then curls the hair using a three quarters curling iron barrel on sections of hair starting from the nape of the neck. At the sides and top of the head he wraps half-inch sections of hair forwards (towards the face) around the curling iron. “This change in motion will allow the hair to fall into a ’20s finger curl wave pattern.” Calero allows the hair to cool before brushing out the curls into soft shiny waves. To get the bob, he then pulls the hair at the back of the head into a low, loose ponytail and secures it with a clear elastic. Next, he rolls the pony under, making sure to tuck in all of the hair and secures it to the nape of the neck with bobby pins.  Lastly, Calero uses his fingers and comb to roll the hair at the sides back and under, securing into the bob at the back and then loosens up the waves with his fingers for an “undone, natural look.”  He finishes the girls off with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray and Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine.

Alice + Olivia’s Stacy Bendet also wanted a little va va voom to complement her rich fabrics and turned to Stila’s Sarah Lucero. She created her “Swinging Starlet” look combining the roaring ’20s with a ’70s feel. Using Stila’s Stay All Day 10-in-1 HD Beauty Balm and Stila’s Illuminating Powder Foundation, Lucero created the perfect canvas. For those sultry eyes, she used two types of mascara—Stila’s Major MAJOR Lash Mascara and Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Volumizing Mascara. Stila’s Lip and Cheek Stain in “Acai Crush” was then applied for the perfect berry lips. “By erasing the extended cat eye, we have modernized and added an edge to the classic Biba-inspired Art Deco Look. The It eye for the It Girl,” Lucero shares.

Elegant and a tad flirty, this retro style is sure to draw a lot of attention! So add a touch of the roaring ’20s at your next outing, just make sure to avoid the fringe and headband or you’ll look as if you’re headed to a costume party!
