It’s no secret that designer Diane von Furstenberg is at something of a crossroads with her business these days. For the first time in several years, her eponymous line is without a creative director after the sudden departure in September of Yvan Mispelaere.
Not surprisingly, von Furstenberg’s fall 2013 collection, saw the designer returning to familiar territory the—glamorous life of the 1970s Party Girl. It’s similar terrain that DVF mined for her spring 2013 collection, and previous seasons before that .
And why not? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it?
DVF knows this woman well because, well, it’s who she is. She was that 1970s Party Girl, the sophisticate who was ready to boogie down at the disco. Now, her fashion fans want to be that girl. Or so von Furstenberg hopes.
So yes, we got some new renditions of the classic DVF wrap dress including chic versions in black jersey, amber and cognac suede. And yes, we saw plenty of bold prints, a DVF trademark; winners included a large scale leopard print that promised to make a woman prowl and purr. Snake, wing and bird motifs were also prominent.
Were the metallic and candy-colored shiny pants a bit too reminiscent of the disco era? Not necessarily. Indeed, DVF’s gold/copper leather pants, paired with a leopard print pony hair and raccoon fur lined jacket over a bronze lame long sleeve blouse seemed perfectly on trend for an evening out.
It must also be said that in a season that trended towards the utilitarian, the fun and funky sensibility of the DVF collection proved to be a welcome respite. Even the most serious woman needs a little fun—and some fun clothes— in her life.
