The trinity of fame, fashion, and faith was on full display at Monday night’s Met Gala where this year’s theme was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. Celebrity attendees seemingly took a strong liking to the theme and showed up, and showed out, in supreme splendor. The red carpet was resplendent in religious regalia and ornamentation, and we have the recap of the stairway to fashion’s biggest night.

IconographyBeing that it was a Catholic-themed event, of course we’d expect to see guests include crosses in their outfits. The Church’s most iconic symbol was on full display proudly commanding attention.
–Ruby Rose in Tommy Hilfiger and Jimmy Choo shoes and Judith Leiber Couture bag
–Trevor Noah in Balmain
-Jennifer Lopez in Balmain and Jimmy Choo shoes and bag
–Marjorie Harvey in Dolce & Gabbana

Crowns, Veils and HeadpiecesOpulent headgear seemed to be the strongest subtheme on the red carpet. Whether donning crowns and tiaras to project authority or donning veils in traditional reverence of modesty, headdress ruled and created some of the best beauty shots ever.
–Rita Ora in Prada and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry
–Mindy Kaling in Vassilis Zoulias
–Kate Bosworth in Oscar de la Renta and Tacori jewelry as the Madonna
–Olivia Munn in H&M, Christian Louboutin shoes, and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry

Habits and VestmentsNot to be outdone by luxurious hairpieces, some attendees opted for full-body Christian attire, vying for the title of the most fashion-forward nuns, bishops, and popes of the Church.
–Lily Collins in Givenchy
–Janelle Monae in Marc Jacobs, Christian Louboutin shoes and Lorraine Fisher jewelry
–Chadwick Boseman in Versace and Christian Louboutin shoes
–Greta Gerwig in The Row and Tiffany & Co. jewelry

The BloodWhile some guests dressed in virginal whites and luxurious golds, others selected red and figuratively cloaked themselves in the Blood of the Lamb.
–Blake Lively in Versace
–Nicki Minaj in Oscar de la Renta
–Mackenzie Davis in Chloe
–Priyanka Chopra in Ralph Lauren

Scenery as FashionWhy simply get dressed to look as if you are going to church? Some on the guest list took their wardrobe to the next level, incorporating actual pieces of the church into their attire.
–Ariana Grande wore a Vera Wang gown decorated with the scene of the Last Supper from the Sistene Chapel.
–Sarah Jessica Parker in Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda and Jennifer Fisher jewelry, worn a dramatic headpiece of a scaled down Nativity scene from an Italian altar.
–Gigi Hadid dressed in an Atelier Versace, made to look like stained glass, accompanied by Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, and Christian Louboutin shoes.
–Stella Maxwell wore a Moschino dress, with reliefs of the Virgin Mary, with Casadei shoes, and David Yurman jewelry.

PersonaAt the pinnacle of the event’s fashion highlights were the guests who completely took on the look of religious characters:
Cardi B in Moschino as the pregnant Mary
Rihanna in custom Maison Margiela by John Galliano with a Judith Leiber Couture clutch, Christian Louboutin shoes, Maria Tash jewelry and Cartier jewelry as the Pope
Zendaya in Atelier Versace, Tiffany & Co. jewelry, and Jimmy Choo shoes as Joan of Arc
Katy Perry in Versace as the Archangel Gabriel
Jared Leto in Gucci as Jesus/Cesare Borgia (?)
