Familiar cities come to mind when thinking about fashion hubs of the world—New York, Milan, Paris, London— however, one designer opted to shy away from the blaring lights of the enchanting international metropolises and got her motivation from a particular city that has been in the news for its economic turmoil. Inspired by the history of urban Detroit’s crumbling economic state and survivalist mentality, designer Ann Yee presents her spring 2014 collection—Resurgence which reveals structured, metallic elements of the auto industry that Detroit is historically known for.
Angular silhouettes, and soft draping against a minimalist nude and pastel color palette are seen throughout the stunning collection inspired by Detroit’s weathered buildings juxtaposed against the cityscape. “I grew up in Michigan and I always admired the city from afar. I was really drawn by the architecture and just the spirit of the city,” says Yee. Her familiarity with the Motor City and longtime admiration of the urban auto hub lends this collection a unique aesthetic as she observed the tragic decline from a distance. “I do feel like a renaissance is happening or is going to happen so my pastel color palette … is a hopeful perspective on the whole thing …,” says Yee.
Ann Yee’s spring 2014 collection gives a new light to the broken city and gives new hope that it might rise again to its former glory.
