The biggest fashion night of the year is over but it left some greatest fashion moments and memories! This year brought some changes and after a two-year renovation and complete reconfiguration, The Costume Institute space at The Metropolitan Museum of Art will reopen as the Anna Wintour Costume Center. First Lady Michelle Obama cut the ceremonial ribbon and officially opened inaugural exhibit: “Charles James: Beyond Fashion” on the morning of May 5th 2014.
“The new space allows us to rethink our approach to the display of historic costume and contemporary fashion,” said Harold Koda, Curator of The Costume Institute.
Charles James, known as “America’s First Couturier” produced a relatively small number of garments over his four decades long career, but he is renowned for his structured creations. According to Harold Koda, “James helped transform fashion” and among some of his iconic garments are curve-hugging “Siren” dress, ribbon capes and dresses, front-point drapery, poufs, zippers on the back of our dresses, and the unforgettable “Clover Leaf” dress with four-lobed skirt.
At the 2014Met Ball, James’ structured gowns were the inspiration and served as a focal point for several of the outfits worn by celebrities. Fashion Reverie is taking you back to the red carpet by choosing some of our favorite and most interesting looks.
Coco Brandolini might not be an A-list celebrity, but she is our big winner in style. In Dolce and Gabbana Alta Moda fall/winter 2013 ,we see a painting of Saint Mark’s Square in Venice, by the 18th-century Italian painter Canaletto. What a breathtaking gown with a little bit of history. She paired it with a renaissance-like necklace and for Fashion Reverie was an example of how one should attend the Met Gala.
Tabitha Simmons chose the same design team but from Alta Moda 2014. This flower child went big and definitely didn’t go home unnoticed.
There are few other fantastic looks by the same designer that we simply had to share. Monica Bellucci and Giovanna Battaglia Viva Italia! If there were a necklace contest these two would most definitely be big competition for other nominees.
Bee Schaffer has fashion in her genes and she definitely made the right choice with a BEEautiful one shoulder, baby blue Alexander McQueen mermaid-like gown. This girl has nice curves, as well.
Another British brand stood out this year on some svelte beauties. Supermodels Jourdan Dunn, Chanel Iman, and Kendall Jenner all opted for TOP SHOP. TOP SHOP’s styles are fun and simply perfect for these young celebs.
Met Gala 2014 was a perfect opportunity for some American designers to shine as well. Karolina Kurkova was one of the most noticed celebrities of the night. The supermodel wore a Marchesa spring 2011 gown in a deep navy blue with a floral print. The dramatic shape and cut of the dress are a work of art.
Fashion Reverie knew that Zac Posen would be dressing a few guests, in that this occasion is a rare opportunity to flaunt dramatic gowns. Sarah Silverman, Karen Elson and Liu Wen were just some of the few that presented him well.
Some homegrown designers and some French fashion houses made their presence known at the 2014 Met Gala. And two of the most common colors of the evening was black and white!
Sarah Jessica Parker made quite an entrance in her big Oscar de la Renta gown. Anna Kendrick in J. Mendel asymmetrical crop top and Katie Couric in Angel Sanchez with white gloves also made everyone stand up and take notice. Hailee Steinfeld looked angelic in Prabal Gurung.
Naomi Campbell and Beyoncé glowed in Givenchy. Still, Fashion Reverie’s favorite in this case is Naomi’s transparent mermaid dress. The dress was just as impressive from behind, with a cutout exposing her toned back and revealing scale-like embellishments.
Charlize Theron looked ravishing in black and white Dior. She seemed like she was happy. Fashion Reverie is not sure if her happiness stems from the stunning Dior gown or because of a first public appearance with her beau Sean Penn.
Fashion Reverie enjoyed watching all the arrivals but we have to admit we missed Madonna. The rumor is her outfit was not approved so she decided to stay home. Oh well until next year…
