2016 is the year of winning fashion collaborations. First, there is the match made in heaven, Tommy Hilfiger and Gigi Hadid. (If you haven’t seen the ads everywhere, you must be living under a rock.) A close second is Kenzo x H&M—already sold out!! Are there are other collaborations in 2016 too many to name.

All these myriad collaborations are an attempt to give a little sparkle, shine and splash to brands that need a dose of vitality and reinvention. Enter Jean-Paule Goude for Lacoste.

For several seasons now, Lacoste has primed the pump when it comes to reinventing traditional tennis clothes and adding a measure of splash and pizazz. (If you ever happen to attend any of the runway shows, you will observe that a lot of the garments go way beyond traditional tennis fare. Unfortunately, many of the pieces that elevate and push the fashion-forward envelope never goes into mass production.) And collaborations are nothing new for Lacoste. There was the ‘Peanuts’ collaboration of a couple of seasons ago and more recently, the collaboration with Maison Lesage. Still, this collaboration with Jean-Paul Goude for the Lacoste 2016 holiday collection pushes Lacoste even more toward the outré, though still a very consumer friendly an accessible outré.

In the past, Jean-Paul Goude has been known for his fashion illustrations, photography—Grace Jones’ album covers, Kim Kardashian in various states of reveal in Interview magazine—art direction and television commercial direction. In this collaboration with Lacoste, Jean-Paul Goude conspiring with Lacoste creative director Felipe Oliveira Baptista has redesigned the iconic Lacoste logo. This re-imaged logo reflects the Africa of Goude’s youth, his love of dance and his infatuation with the Bauhaus.

“As a kid, the crocodile has always been one of my favorite characters. The crocodile is a bad guy, but he is a bad guy with a heart. He is a star in my world,” explains Jean-Paul Goude. “My story [for this holiday campaign] is the momma and poppa [crocodile] are very worried about the future of their child. This possibility of making my characters is wonderful. It is an opportunity I cannot let go by.”
