Fashion Reverie’s Golden Globe 2014 Red Carpet Recap

image

Fashion Reverie loves awards season! While all the nominees were nervous about who would receive a Golden Globes statuette, Fashion Reverie was on the look out for which celebs wore it best and whose style to follow throughout award season!

The 71st Golden Globes produced a stream of great gowns and a good amount of bad choices! The truth is these stars can choose to wear anything they want but the requirement should be “look at the mirror before you make a decision”! Learn what looks good on your body type, wear colors that compliment your skin, and get a gown that fits!

Fashion Reverie picked a few of our favorite and not-so favorite looks:

We have to say BINGO to Lupita Nyong’o! She made sure that we all know how to spell her name right by knocking it out of the park with a Ralph Lauren red cape dress! She looked stunning! This young actress is a natural on the red carpet. She looked confident and comfortable with very little make up and a simple hairstyle. Her jewels by Fred Leighton added to the look.

There was another red look on the carpet that looked like a transformer dress. British actress Emma Watson forgot to “transform” this risk-taking gown, leaving the back open. Wearing black pants underneath and Roger Vivier blue shoes only added to the already odd choice. Yes, it is Christian Dior, and yes we are talking about her; however, daring and unique is one thing and appropriate is another!  And in Watson’s case, the two didn’t come together. Watson could learn how to show off a sexy back from Cate Blanchett.  Blanchett wore a black-laced perfection from Armani Prive with high collar gown. Her look was breathtaking and the cherry-on-the-top were Chopard diamond earrings.

High low silhouettes were quite a trend last night; however, that’s a look that is not easy to pull off. Drew Barrymore wore Monique Lhullier paired with Roger Vivier open-toe red pumps; an interesting combination. Still, Barrymore looked more like a big garden of flowers than red-carpet royalty. We give her “cute,” if that is what she was going for. Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta had a great idea, but a crop top is pretty risky. Zooey is too young for this look, and she should stick to brighter colors.  Caitlin Fitzgerald was the one celeb that wore an asymmetrical gown the best; powder blue dress by Emilia Wickstead straight from the spring 2014 runway.

Zac Posen makes beautiful dresses but they still need to be fitted properly. Fashion Reverie compared how very similar dresses can look very different on the red carpet. Lena Dunham from Girls is not very girly but we have to give her credit for trying and even practicing how to strike a pose. Unfortunately, canary yellow is not her color and the dress is not a good fit on her body. Sofia Vergara’s dress IS the right fit, her “globes” are in place, and Loraine Schwartz’s necklace added a great pop of color.

Paula Patton decided to bring an extra, plus one!  (The plus one being the ruffled embellishment on her dress.) Ruffles are overwhelming in this Stephane Rolland’s creation. Though the gown is editorial and looked great on the runway, for Patton, who usually dresses on point, this was a big fashion failure. Kerry Washington knows how to tuck in her plus one and looked fabulous in Balenciaga.

Monica Potter was all glitzy and glam in Romona Keveza’s gold metallic top and long black elegant skirt. (Check out Fashion Reverie’s review of Kevaza’s bridal show. The show featured that gown.) Juila Roberts went with a similar look but she seemed rather casual in Dolce & Gabbana.

Lastly, we have to consider if Prabal Gurung just sewed together all of his leftover fabrics to create a dress for Zoe Saldana. Rags to riches; hmm, something to think about!!
