2020 promises new beginnings and new directions; however, it is important to look back at some of things accomplished in 2019. The year 2019 was a very interesting year in fashion. We lost some iconic fashion designers—Karl Lagerfeld, Emanuel Ungaro, Max Azria, and Chris March. And some well-known fashion brands and retail stores had to close shop, declared bankruptcy or experienced financial difficulties, namely Zac Posen, Barney’s New York, Roberto Cavalli, Sonia Rykiel, Jason Wu, Charlotte Russe, Forever 21 and many others.

Still, with all the fashion moving and shaking in 2019, there were some triumphs and great stories. Reflecting on all the good times of 2019, Fashion Reverie has selected 10 of its top feature stories. These selected features are not in a particular order.

1)     CNN’s documentary on Halston was a great success, bringing in lots of viewers to CNN. Our contributing editor Kristopher Fraser was fortunate to secure an interview with “HALSTON’s” director Frédéric Tcheng prior to the documentary premiere on CNN.

2)     Have you ever wondered about the personal style of Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Richard Avedon, Cindy Sherman, Leigh Bowery, and many others? In her groundbreaking book, “Legendary Artists and the Clothes They Wore,” fashion editor Terry Newman profiles the work of more than forty iconic artists in relationship to how they dressed. And Fashion Reverie was blessed to be able to interview Newman about this seminal piece of non-fiction.

3)     Fashion Reverie’s beauty editor Janine Silver brought all her great skills to the fore in her “2019 Summer Music Festival” article. The article detailed how to look bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at the Governor’s Ball Music Festival, Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Firefly Music Festival, and all the bold music festivals of Summer 2019.

4)     Associate editor Francesca Simon kicked the ball out of the park with her “From Clicks Back to Bricks” article. This article detailed how young consumers are moving away in record numbers from online shopping to brick-and-mortar stores; but not in traditional shopping modes. Francesca Simon aptly demonstrates in this article that young consumers are more and more attracted to experiential, brick-and-mortar retail shopping. Retailers take notice.

5)     Fashion Reverie had the unique opportunity in the summer of 2019 to interview Claudine van der Bergh Cook, lead dancer from the Moulin Rouge. Claudine was in New York City with Moulin Rouge publicist Fanny Rabasse for the opening of the Broadway musical” Moulin Rouge.” Our article, “The Moulin Rouge: 130 Years of Brilliance,” detailed the incredible history of the famed Moulin Rouge, its costumes and the origins of the can-can.

6)     Associate editor Kristopher Fraser delivered once again with his 2019 holiday article, “How Generation Z Is Shaping the Future of Retail.” This article gives deep introspection and nuance about the shopping habits of Generation Z. The timing of the article blended perfectly with the 2019 holiday season.

7)     Fashion Reverie is setting industry standards with our fashion editorials and 2019 was no exception. This year Fashion Reverie executed one of our most interesting and fashion-forward editorials, “Modern Fairytales.” In this editorial we explore fairytale characters—Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, and The Emperor’s New Clothes—as seen through the lens of 80s street style.

Our managing editor Carl Ayers was able to get into editor-in-chief William S. Gooch’s head and style the bejesus out of this editorial. This editorial was edgy, chic, joyous, and both now and next!!

8)     This has been a banner year for associate editor Kristopher Fraser. Kristopher Fraser rendered a great interview with the director of “Very Ralph,” Susan Lacey.

9)     In case you didn’t know, legacy fragrances are becoming all the rage. And Fashion Reverie is always in the mix when it comes to being ahead of the fashion curve. Our story on “Blocki Fragrances: The True American Luxury Fragrance” gave voice to the reinvigorated Blocki Fragrance line. Blocki Fragrances has been around since the late 1880s and great grandson Tyler Kraemer has brought the company back with a bang.

10) Associate editor Cameron Grey Rose curated a fantastic article on “Ethically Sound 2019 Holiday Gifts.” As we struggle globally with climate disaster, it is so important to not only take note of the global footprint of products and their effect on the environment, but to also do something about it!! For holiday season 2019, Cameron gave consumers a wealth of environmentally sustainable gifts to choose from.
