Korean designer Kathleen Kye looked to urban streetwear mixed with a bit of glam for inspiration for her spring 2014 collection. Known primarily as a streetwear designer, Kathleen Kye has always tried to find that delicate balance between hip, urban streetwear with swagger and looks that also have a fashion-forward sensibility.
In this outing, Kye attempted to incorporate a bit of bling by using shiny metallic and having some women’s looks that brought the sexy side of the brand’s client base. Kye incorporated the trend this season of exposed midriffs and lingerie as outerwear. Embellished bandages on the garments was an interesting addition, but perhaps too gimmicky for the consumer outside of Kye’s client base.
In contrast to other designers who design menswear, Kye has stayed away from fitted pants and has stayed solidly in the low-hanging, baggy pant aesthetic of the late 90s. By combing the baggy pant aesthetic with an active wear point of view, Kye does lift this collection about of an homage to urban brands of the late 90s and early 2000s. Still, this collection seems targeted to a very small urban demographic without much viability to general youth population.
Kathleen Kye does have ideas. And fashion is dull and empty without innovative ideas. However, fashion is at its best joyful. And Kathleen Kye’s painfully wounded youth aesthetic may be just too dour for mass consumption!!
