New York International Bridal Week Spring 2016 Hair Trend: Simple, Stunning and Undone

Gone are the days of perfectly structured up-dos and elegant twists.  This season the prettiest hair was simple and a lot more natural.  Lead stylist Joseph DiMaggio shares the top bridal trends from the runway, “We’re seeing a lot of braids and very tasteful accessories.  The hair is more up this season; just soft and not too done, not too [produced] looking.  Very soft, very matte finish, very youthful.”

Ponytails are normally reserved for trips to the gym. Angel Mendez from Glam Squad created both low and high ponytails for Tony Ward for Kleinfeld’s collection.  “Playing with the natural texture of the hair,” Mendez took a seemingly simple style and made it wedding day appropriate.

DiMaggio designed a soft rope chignon for Naeem Khan’s global brides.  To add a little volume and texture DiMaggio added Davines More Inside This Is a Volume Boosting Mousse and blowdried that in.  The hair was brought back into a low bun that was rope braided.  “Rope braids are really in right now especially moving into the summer [in addition to] braids in general,” DiMaggio explains.  The bun which was designed to look like a flower for an “extra little bridal touch” was finished off by pulling out wispy pieces from the top and the sides to give it that “wind swept romantic do.”  DiMaggio finished off the look with Davines More Inside This Is a Medium Hold Hair Spray to keep everything in place.

At Reem Acra, DiMaggio designed long sleek braids adorned with pearls and diamonds, turning the hair into jewelry.  To get the look, create a strong center part and a ponytail at the occipital bone.  Secure the ponytail with an elastic cord and braid hair.  For the show, DiMaggio used extensions, creating perfectly adorned 12″ braids, but the enhanced braids would look great at any length.

Monique Lhuillier kept hair off the face, also focusing on a center part, while Oscar de la Renta brushed the hair back avoiding any part at all.  While very simple, these more natural looks feel light and airy allowing the bride’s natural beauty to shine through.

Natural and airy, New York International Bridal Week spring 2016 showed us that hair doesn’t need to be too complicated to still look elegant.  We love these braids, buns and ponies for a fresh and unexpected wedding day hairstyle.
