It’s the most wonderful time of the year! December means a heavy schedule of holiday parties and family gatherings. Let’s look to the celebrity red-carpet appearances for ideas for what to wear at these holiday soirees and what trends should be aggressively ignored.

Feathers
This trend seemed to rear its head every few years on red carpets, but consumers are smart enough to leave it there. Feathers can make even the most put-together outfit look sloppy and give you odd silhouettes. Or in Emma Roberts‘ case make it seems like she’s being attacked by giant centipedes. The worst part is it’s difficult to anchor feathers, so often you’ll end up molting all over the party.

Red Suits
Red is the color of the season and the stars are donning red suits to walk the red carpet! It’s a fun look, made chic by accessorizing red with black and keeping your ensembles tailored. Try to avoid white as that will steer your holiday outfit into Santa territory.
Rock it!

Blazers
This began as a trend on Milan’s runways this year and it’s wonderful to see it segue onto the red carpet. Blazers are perfect for holiday parties. They elevate any outfit and they often have pockets which are sorely lacking on most ladies’ garments. They help keep you warm and can be worked into your everyday wardrobe. Rose Bryne nails the look by wearing her blazer with jeans (not sure about those shoes).
Rock it!

Sparkle
As much as we love to sparkle in gowns embellished with crystals or sequins, sometimes it’s just not appropriate outside of special events and parties. The holiday season is the perfect time to break out the shine! Avoid head to toe sequins or you risk looking like a drag queen, not to mention deeply sequined gowns can be very heavy. When choosing an embellished gown make sure you try it on first and move around in it including sitting down. Sometimes crystals or other embellishments can make it hard to move or poke you when you’re seated.
Rock it!

Waist bows
Why is this a thing? Waist bows? Bows are great of course but their placement can be tricky. Niecy Nash would look fabulous in this dress but the bow interrupts her silhouette and gives her a thick waist. Connie Britton and Julianne Hough are slender fit women, but with those bows even they look thick-waisted and hippy.
