Fashion Reverie has brought back its “Rock It or Leave It on the Runway” feature. Our viewers loved this snarky feature so much that we decided to bring it back. And it will now be a monthly feature!!
This month’s “Rock It or Leave it on the Runway” examines and critiques fashion trends from the 2017 Cannes Film Festival red carpets. Enjoy, enjoy!!
Statement Sunglasses
Sunglasses are vital for summer and this season, dramatic, wacky, embellished sunglasses are being embraced on the red carpet! If you find a pair you love, don’t be afraid to invest some money in a high-quality pair of statement sunglasses. They’ll bring dramatic fun to your summers for years. Sunglasses don’t just look great; they prevent squinting that can cause wrinkles over time. Make sure you check that the glasses have SPF and UV protection. Rock it!
Massive trains
Trains on dresses (or in Kendall Jenner’s case a top!) create such an eye-catching spectacle; however, can be absurdly impractical for your average consumer. This is unfortunate as this look can be both dramatic and zany! Alas, unless you can afford to hire strong men to follow you around to keep the train from being shredded and to catch you when it inevitably gets stepped on, this trend is strictly for celebs. Leave it.
Denim
Denim is looking to be huge this season. So much so that the causal look is even being spotted on red carpets! Coming in a considerable number of styles, it’s not hard to find a cut that will flatter you. High-waisted jeans scream “Mom Jeans” and are to be avoided even by Moms (sorry Sophia Coppola) At the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, Marion Cotillard put a dress over her pants creating a cool contrast between her couture gown and her blue jeans. Kendall Jenner paired her distressed cutoffs with a luxe top. Have some fun and mix it up. Rock it!
Garish Embellishments and Prints
One of the biggest dangers of walking the red carpet is you run the risk of being boring. Taking risks can make you look ridiculous even if it does make you memorable (Who can forget Bjork’s Swan Dress?). This year at Cannes many celebs gambled on over-the-top gowns, and we all won! Overly embroidered dresses, bright floral prints are taking over the red carpet. Wearing bold looks can be tricky. Keep every other aspect of your outfit simple. No jewelry, neutral makeup, simple ballet flats or pumps. Rock it!
Champagne Color
Gowns in champagne tones were all over the red carpets at Cannes. This versatile color can flatter many complexions. Darker skin, with yellow under tones, will want to stick to the strictly pale yellow while cooler, fair skin tones should look for hues with blush undertones. Since the color is mostly neutral, you can take advantage and play up your accessories. Often stars will don champagne gowns as to display their dazzling jewelry to full effect. The color can also be very sexy. For pale-skinned women champagne gives the illusion of displaying more skin. Remember, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) from “Sex and the City”? When SJP donned a champagne slip dress that matched her own skin tone she called it her ‘naked’ dress! Rock it!
Thigh High Slit
There are a plethora looks that work on the red carpet that simply don’t translate to other situations. Thigh high slits are gorgeous, but sometimes impractical. With thigh high slits sometimes your underwear is on full display, which requires a large amount of double back tape and a lot of fear. Taping your dress to your skin can make walking, sitting, even standing downright uncomfortable, and there is no guarantee that the garment won’t come unmoored. I’m not even going to talk about what happens at the end of night when it comes time to rip the tape off!! This one is a hard pass. . Leave it!
