Style Alert: Floral Prints Are Bursting Out All Over

“Florals for spring, groundbreaking,” remember that sarcastic remark from Miranda Priestly in “The Devil Wears Prada”? Well, floral prints for spring is not ground breaking, innovative or fashion forward, unless you are in step with the ingenious way designers are incorporating this tried-and-true spring aesthetic for spring 2015.

From Michael Kors to Max Mara to Theia, ready-to-wear spring 2015 collections are literally blossoming with big floral prints this season. And now that the weather has finally warmed up on the East Coast, floral prints will be disappearing off the shelves of mega retail stores and boutiques.

Lily Pulitzer’s collaboration with Target—shutting down Target’s site on launch day—is evidence that consumers are not bored or oversaturated with the big floral trend. And forget about your grandma’s living room curtains, this season’s big floral prints are a far cry from anything going on in granny’s house.

True to form, Fashion Reverie looks to keep its viewers in touch with how well-known designers have incorporated this trend, but we also like to give a nod to some not so known designers who are killing this trend for spring 2015. Michael Kors used lot of floral prints in his spring 2015 collection and though he included crop top silhouettes with a slight nod to all-American sportswear or the Hampton and Newport chic aesthetic of Lily Pulitzer, where he distinguished himself from other designers that used big floral prints was in his inclusion of big floral embellishments on his garments.

For Kors big foral prints went beyond digital representations. By embracing big floral embellishment cutouts combined with plaid tops and overlays, Kors halted the tongues of some fashion pundits who consider him more of a merchandiser than a fashion designer.

Max Mara dived head first into big floral prints for spring by looking to American sportswear of the early 70s embodied in fashion model Angelica Huston. (Surprise to all you fashion newbies that Huston was a fashion model before she became an award-winning actress.)

Though his silhouettes were willowy with matchy-matchy boots, blouses and skirts, Mara did not go wrong in this outing with big flora prints with a few smaller muted floral prints thrown in for good measure.

Desigual is known for its floral prints regardless of the seasons. And of course, the brand followed suit for spring 2015 looking to Latin America for inspiration. The thing about Desigual is that the clothes and attitude is all about fun and frivolity and the price tag will not break your bank.

You may not be aware that bridal brand Theia also makes exquisite ready-to-wear clothes. Creative director Don O’Neill funneled his vision of big floral prints through an artist’s eye of colorful brush strokes. Though the prints are digital, the craftsmanship and scope looks hand painted, with great skirts and tea dresses perfect for evening cocktails around the pool or a warm night out on the town.

Sachin and Babi have established their brand as the go-to brand for embellishments and intricate detailing, giving a nod to the East Indian heritage. However, this season they went sporty with a little Rorshach floral-like print added in for effect—now that is original. Though the floral printed-effect is not a bold and big as in other collections, for their more eveningwear line “Noir” the effect is a surefire hit. N
